This website is dedicated to my daughter Monica, who was born with a life-threatening neural tube defect, called an occipital encephalocele. The encephalocele contained a substantial portion of her brain. We were given a dire prognosis for her survival. On Christmas Eve (two days after birth), Monica underwent surgery. After 6 hours of surgery, we were told that our baby Monica had survived - our own Christmas miracle! Monica is now in her twenties. Despite multiple disabilities (cortical blindness, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and a complex partial seizure disorder), Monica has great motivation, continuing to learn and enjoy life. Monica is a delight and inspiration to all that know her. We hope that this website will provide hope and support for other families with special needs.
